Founding Editor of Just Decarbonize
Ankush Kumar is the founding editor of Just Decarbonize and a Berlin-based multimedia journalist covering the global energy transition. His reporting focuses on industrial decarbonisation, clean energy, technology, and climate policy across India, Germany, and the wider Asia-Europe region.
With more than a decade of journalism experience, Ankush began his career covering enterprise technology before specialising in cybersecurity and digital governance. As digital transformation reshaped heavy industries, his reporting expanded to cover renewable energy, power systems, and the political and economic dimensions of decarbonisation. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in English Journalism from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi.
In 2018, he participated in the Clean Energy Wire (CLEW) study tour on Germany’s coal phase-out, reporting from North Rhine-Westphalia on the transformation of former lignite mining regions. He later worked as consulting editor with the Research Institute for Sustainability (RIFS), Potsdam, on the COBENEFITS project, contributing to policy research on decarbonising India’s power sector.
His cross-border investigation into lead poisoning linked to informal lead-acid battery recycling was recognised with the Ernst-Schneider-Preis from the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) and the Deutscher Journalistenpreis (djp) in 2019. He is also a recipient of the Fetisov Journalism Award.
His reporting has appeared in numerous national and international publications, including Der Spiegel, Frankfurter Rundschau, The Economic Times, and The Financial Express. He also moderates discussions on climate, energy, sustainability, and technology, bringing together policymakers, researchers, industry leaders, and civil society.
