Freelance journalist

Sonja Ernst is a freelance journalist and editor at various media since 2005. She is working for online, print and radio media like SWR, Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandfunk Kultur, Deutschlandfunk Nova, Journal Amnesty International etc. As well she is a podcast producer.

Her main field of work is politics and society. She reports mainly from Germany and Asia.

In 2015, she was fellow of the Robert Bosch foundation's program "Media Ambassador India-Germany". During her stay in India she was with Outlook, a weekly news magazine based in New Delhi. In 2018, she was fellow of the grant program "Reporters in the Field" supporting cross-border stories. Her team reported on children born of war in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. In 2021, she and her colleague Christine Werner were nominated for the "Deutscher Sozialpreis" for their report on the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic in nursing homes. In 2022, she won the Peter Scholl-Latour award for courageous and independent reporting on people in crisis and conflict areas for her report on children born of war in Bosnia and Rwanda.

She was member of the executive board of the Indo-German Media Network from 2018 to 2021.
